Farncombe. Recorders, voices and viols. Andrew Collis 18 October / 1.05pm*
Sherborne, Dorset (venue tbc)
Voices and Viols day - William Byrd through his own eyes.
Uri Smilansky, Kate Hawnt, Gawain Glenton
The deserved reputation of William Byrd as a central pillar of the English Renaissance is well established and widely disseminated. We invite you to join us in exploring some of his output, concentrating on vocal repertoire, Viol music, and the combination of the two. This journey, be it one of discovery or of revisiting old friends, will be taken from a unique viewpoint – that of Byrd himself. As befitting a day dedicated to the holder of a monopoly over music printing, we will attempt to perform his music from the very prints he labored over.
DO NOT WORRY, NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED!!!
Just a willingness to take a tentative step or two outside your comfort-zone...
After some introduction to the look, layout and notation of these prints, we will work in groups on selected works from his Gradualia ac Cantiones Sacrae of 1610, the Psalms, Sonnets and Songs of Sadness and Pietie (1588), as well as his Masses and instrumental Fantasies. There is something for everyone!
The course is designed for individual singers and Viol players, or pre-formed ensembles. Lunch is not included.
