The Society's Thematic Index of Music for Viols was produced as a paper copy in six instalments between 1980 and 1992, edited by Gordon Dodd. He then handed the project to Andrew Ashbee and a seventh instalment was issued on CD-ROM in 2002. In 2004 the whole Index was issued on CD-ROM and the paper copy was discontinued. From 2008 the Index will be available on-line in .pdf format (although CD-ROM copies can still be made for those preferring one). It is intended to up-date the Index annually.

The Index is listed by composer, together with a substantial anonymous section. At present the pages are scans of the originals and are not electronically searchable. Annual lists of the up-dates for both new and revised pages (from 2004) are given in the introduction.

Initial work concentrated on English sources, which are now largely indexed, but the Society would be grateful for help in searching and indexing continental sources, both printed and in manuscript. Please contact Dr Andrew Ashbee if you are able to help in any way.
