The Viola da Gamba Society produces several types of publications
for both members and non-members. Brief descriptions of these
are given below, and further details are available by clicking
the above tabs.
Music for Viols (Music Editions)
Low-cost editions of a large variety of music for viol consort
(3-part to 6-part), solo, and accompanied viols, are available.
These Music Editions are sometimes referred to as 'supplementary'
publications for obscure historical reasons ... in fact they
are the Society's main music publications.
Thematic Index of Music for Viols
This is the result of several decades of research by members
of the Society led by Gordon Dodd, with the aim of cataloguing
all known music for the viol, in consort, ensemble and solo.
Most English sources are now covered, but much work remains
to be done on overseas sources.
Chelys
The Society has published an annual scholarly journal Chelys
for many years, containing articles on a wide variety of topics
to do with the viol and its music. The new web-based journal
to replace Chelys (see just below) is also produced annually, and
started in 2007.
The Viola da Gamba Society Journal
This on-line Journal replaces Chelys, the first issue appeared
in 2007. It is published annually. The intention is
to provide substantial articles on the viol and its music similar
to those in Chelys and which may be too lengthy for the Society’s
newsletter The Viol. We also include extensive
reviews of major publications.
The VIOL - (newsletter)
This quarterly publication, issued free to members, replaced
the long-established newsletter in 2006. It provides
news about forthcoming events, listings of new CDs and publications,
reports of meetings, reviews, information about viol activities
around the world, and a range of other material, including some
more substantial articles about viols, their music and its composers
and performers.
Miscellaneous
This section is reserved for miscellaneous publications by members of the Society which we wanted to include on the site.
It is expected that we make more documents available in future.
