The Viola da Gamba Society was founded in 1948 with the aim of advancing the study of viols, their music, their playing, and their making. The origin of the Society lay in the campaign from 1889 onwards of the 'fiery and impatient genius' Arnold Dolmetsch for a return to the performance practice, and particularly the instruments, of former periods. By 1948, when the Society had its first official meeting, there was some more playing of viols happening, and some publications of viol music available. Summer courses for viols and recorders were organised, as well as a competition to encourage modern composers to write for old instruments. Since then the Viola da Gamba Society has gone from strength to strength and has now over 500 members worldwide.
